The ONG Iniciativa Verde identifies, together with strategic partners, relevant areas, both in terms of carbon stock potential and for climate change adaptation.

THE ATLANTIC FOREST
The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is identified as a tropical forest biome. Its territory extends from the East, Southeast and South coast of Brazil, to the East of Paraguay and a portion of Argentina, in South America.
Its entire area is of extreme environmental importance for the regulation and climate balance around the world.
But, due to its rich biodiversity, the Atlantic Forest has become the main target of deforestation and human exploitation over all these years.
For this reason, it is the second most threatened biome on the planet, struggling to survive and maintain its remaining 12.5% of forest belonging to its original ecosystem. To give you an idea, the majority of Brazilian species of animals and plants (vegetation) threatened with extinction belong to this biome.
Not to mention that a large part of the native indigenous communities of this area since the colonization of the country are already extinct, due to the lack of resources in the region, and only a portion of these tribes still survive.
Even so, there are still several different native animal species, including more than 270 mammals, 1000 birds, 370 amphibians, 200 reptiles and 350 fish, such as the golden lion tamarin, the jaguar, the capybara, the leopard, sloth , the ocelot and hummingbirds among many other animals.
It is not by chance that all this wealth of such a diverse ecosystem attracts criminal and illegal exploitation of nature.
As a result, more than 60% of the native animals in this area became extinct at the beginning of the year 2000, harming and negatively impacting the ecosystem as a whole.
Currently, 72% of the Brazilian population lives along the urban strip located in the Atlantic Forest and 70% of the National GDP is concentrated in this biome.
The same area is also home to traditional native indigenous tribes such as the Wassu, Pataxó, Tupiniquim, Gerên, Guarani, Krenak, Kaiowa, Nandeva, Terena, Kadiweu, Potiguara, Kaingang, Guarani MBya and Tangerang, among others that have survived.
